We’re so anticipating the scents, rituals, and celebrations that come with winter. But, a few things we’re not looking forward to? The effects that colder, drier temperatures have on our skin. Just as we change up our outfits and pace from season to season, it’s necessary to switch up our beauty routines, too. We’re turning to our resident skincare expert Dr. Renée Synder to get us prepped to pamper our skin all winter long. Here’s her advice on how to keep skin healthy and glowing in winter.
Skin gets exposed to the elements: cold air, whipping wind, lower humidity, and sunshine reflecting off of the snow steals moisture from our winter skin. And then, once we’re indoors, skin gets blasted with dry heat from our heaters. It’s no wonder why our skin often ends up dry, flaky, and itchy.
The natural oils your skin produces also help protect your skin barrier and keep it healthy. It’s a good idea to avoid long baths and showers, and you shouldn’t wash your body more than once a day. When you do shower or bathe, use warm (not hot) water, and don’t make it longer than 15 minutes. After bathing or showering, pat dry and moisturize your damp skin with a cream (preferably rather than a lotion) that contains ceramides, which helps repair itchy, dry skin. Counter the drying effects of indoor heat by running a humidifier. Skin will reflect the moisture in the air. If it’s humid, your skin will not be as dry.
Increasing your water intake will help hydrate your skin.
Sunscreen is needed all year-round— and we should apply it every two hours every day, if possible. Choose a sunscreen you like and use it everyday!
