We’re headed into a season of more connection — from self-exploration to traveling beyond our own homes (just for the fun of it!) — for the first time in a long time. And, while spontaneity and adventure are sitting squarely at the top of our bucket lists, we’re also on a mission to protect and respect our skin care while traveling.
We tapped Keys Soulcare’s consulting dermatologist Dr. Renée Snyder to share five tips for being good to ourselves and our skin no matter where we’re headed.
Did you know that thirst is a sign that we’re already dehydrated? That’s exactly why Dr. Renée recommends bringing a reusable water bottle everywhere you go and filling it up on the regular. “Aim to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily, eat fruits and vegetables that are high in water content (such as watermelon), and not over-exert yourself in the heat or sun.” She also adds that while tempting, alcoholic, caffeinated, and sugary beverages tend to dehydrate us, too.
“Moisturizers work best on skin that is wet or slightly damp,” shares Dr. Renée. Go ahead, apply your body cream or lotion within three minutes of getting out of the bath or shower. This timing trick will help nourish the skin and minimize the potential “sticky” feeling that many of us try to avoid. Another thing to consider? The type of moisturizer you’re lathering onto your face and body. “When climates are drier, I reach for a cream [with a] thicker consistency,” she explains. “When I’m at the beach or in a humid environment, I use a product that is lighter such as a lotion or gel.”
“I generally think that if you can brush your teeth, you can wash your face,” says Dr. Snyder. “If you are in a different time zone or working crazy hours, great facial wipes come in handy. [Plus,] you can moisturize or apply facial creams after removing the makeup or dirt from the day.”
“Evidence has shown that getting at least six hours of sleep a night is crucial to maintaining your health, mentally and physically,” reminds Dr. Renée. “Formulate a routine for downtime. Light the candle, put your hair up, and try to enjoy the motions of self-care.” If you want to elevate your bedtime routine, she loves to wind down with our Comforting Balm.
Dr. Renée’s final piece of advice is that self-connection is key to looking and feeling your best, no matter where you go. (That can mean planning a few quiet moments into each day or stashing a few travel-perfect offerings from our Starter Sets into your carry-on.)
“Most of all, taking the time to connect yourself to what you are doing is the most important thing,” she says. “Finding that love and connection to yourself is what will energize you, keep you centered, and make you a better traveler and travel companion.”
