Our scent expert Catherine Selig shares how “setting the mood” with smells can enrich our everyday lives.
– KEYS SOULCARE
Scents have the power to transport us, whether by grounding us into the moment or taking us back to a time we hold close in our memories and hearts. This sense-driven, spirit-centered philosophy continues to shape our approach to all of our offerings, especially with our Sage + Oat Milk Candle, rose-infused Reviving Aura Mist, and honey-blended Golden Cleanser. Our take? Each one of our offerings should feel good on as many levels as possible — from skin to nose to soul.
“By connecting with our sense of smell through scents, we simply connect better with ourselves,” says multi-generation perfumer and Keys Soulcare fragrance consultant Catherine Selig, drawing a connection between scent, memory, and mindfulness. She adds, “we can travel in time, deep into our memories. We can be in tune with how we feel in the present. And, we can envision and meditate on the future with a greater sense of clarity.”
1. Treat Scents as Soulcare
According to Selig, reflecting on scent-memory is a soulcare ritual all its own. Her tip: that we should challenge ourselves to revel in scent experiences the way we might a beautiful piece of music.
“Smells and music connect to the same part of the brain,” says Selig, recalling the ease of working with Alicia to create Keys Soulcare’s scents from the start. “The memories they awaken stay the most vivid for longer periods of time than something we’ve experienced or taken in with our eyes only.”
With this in mind, it makes even more sense to revel in the simple pleasures of a well-spiced home-cooked meal, or even the smell of a loved one’s hair after too much time apart. (Consider this your invite to embrace, linger, and savor your next magic moments to your nose’s content.)
2. Pair Soothing Smells and Physical Touchstones
Want to layer more of your moments with empowering smells? Selig recommends giving your prized possessions a lil coat of something fragrant.
“Spray scents around you like a halo — or on a lucky piece of clothing or jewelry that you cannot live without,” says Selig.
Go ahead, pick the right scent that matches your mood and get spritzing.
3. Blend and Build Based On The Moment
ICYMI, we’ve all got aromas and essences for every vibe and occasion. But, have you ever considered layering a few of your go-tos for both the scent and visual soothe factor? (Neither did we… until now, that is.)
“I also recommend using different scented candles together in unison to create your own scented sanctuary, according to how you feel and which intention you are manifesting at that time,” says Selig.
A delicious scent that’s authentically you? Yes, please.
When do you notice scent playing a role in your soulcare? Do you have your own techniques for layering into your everyday life?
