“My skin didn't start to change until I changed the energy around me.” - Alicia Keys

Hard truth? We’ve all fallen into some not-so-great skincare habits and patterns over the course of our lives. Whether it’s using the same products from our teenage years or not wearing enough SPF, we’re all a little guilty of breaking the skin rules that work for us — or making it up as we go along.
Thankfully, there’s always time to turn over a new leaf and love on ourselves — and our skin. But don’t take our word for it. Here, a few lightworkers share their skincare “no’s” and “not-anymores” to inspire you to hit refresh on your rituals, ASAP.
“I came into the game as a young girl, and that meant lights and stress, and products, and trying to figure it all out while my skin was dealing with it. It took some time to be able to find the time to know myself and my skin, and to really listen to them. I learned over the years that beauty is more about frequency, vibrations, and energy — how you feel. That’s what makes you beautiful.” — Alicia Keys, Keys Soulcare creator and goddess-in-chief
“I’ve stopped feeling like I need 10 products or every new product on the market. I’ve learned that simple skincare is best for me, so my routine mostly consists of fragrance-free products that are gentle. I use prescription retinol as my main treatment and my face wash and moisturizer feature products like oats and hyaluronic acid. I make a point to wear sunscreen every day because Black folks not getting sunburnt or skin cancer is definitely a myth! Also, double moisturizing my body with butter and oil has become one of my favorite small moments of self-care.” — Tiffany Curtis, sex educator and relationship doula. To limit your skincare routine to necessities only, we recommend checking out our skincare sets, like the Soulcare Skin + Body Sampler, or the Starter Ritual!
“Focusing on acts versus outcomes: enjoying the process of making a coffee or cooking, or really enjoying my skincare process versus the goal of ‘having great skin.’” — Ivan Lam, beauty and grooming influencer
“Over time, I’ve ditched most skincare habits with the exception of sunscreen. While I feel most sunscreen promotion is based on ageism (stop wrinkles! get rid of age spots!), I have skin cancer in my family so that’s my focus. I’ve spent so much time looking up close, literally, at beautiful portraits of women with older skin and it has made me get really curious about what drives my skincare choices. I’ve realized most of them were rooted in looking ’younger,’ so these days I’m only looking to stay clean, hydrated, and protected from skin cancer.” — Grace Bonney, community founder and author
“’I’ve become more educated about ingredients and what works for me and doesn’t, no matter how trendy it is. Since starting [skincare platform] The Method Male, more people send me stuff. But, I no longer feel the need to perform self-care on-camera or personally. If that means that I don’t use make-up wipes and just take time to wash my face, or that I abstain from skincare products for a period of time and switch it up with just Manuka honey, so be it.” — Saleam Tyree Singleton, founder of The Method Male. Looking for a simple, yet ingredient rich skincare product? Try our Harmony Mask with Manuka Honey, a purifying charcoal face mask that hydrates the skin!
