When police raided the Stonewall Inn in 1969, it sparked a series of protests in New York City’s Greenwich Village neighborhood, known as the Stonewall Riots.
At the time, discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals was legal and widely accepted. However, with the bravery and leadership of transgender women of color, the LGBTQ+ community decided they were tired of being mistreated and fought back.
These protests catalyzed the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, and we continue to honor them every June during Pride month with parades, parties, and other events.
And because you can never have too much pride, we’re sharing five unique ways to celebrate the month and show the LGBTQ+ community love daily.
One way to celebrate Pride Month is to support LGBTQ+-owned businesses. You can do this by shopping at LGBTQ+ bookstores, restaurants, and other small businesses in your area. By doing so, you’re supporting the community and promoting diversity and inclusion in your community.
Another way to celebrate Pride Month is to volunteer for LGBTQ+ causes. You can do this by donating your time to local LGBTQ+ organizations or participating in community events. This is a great way to meet new people, make a difference, and show your support for the community.
Members of the LGBTQ+ community have always been here but are often ignored or left out of mainstream discussions. Educating yourself on LGBTQ+ history, issues, and rights will allow you to uncover little-known facts, connections, and biases that have existed throughout time. You can start by reading books, watching documentaries, or attending lectures and workshops. Learning more about the community means understanding their struggles and triumphs to broaden your knowledge and empathy.
Many Pride events have moved online. This means you can attend virtual events from anywhere in the world. There are virtual parades, concerts, and other events that you can participate in from the comfort of your own home.
Finally, one of the best ways to celebrate Pride Month is to have meaningful conversations with the people in your life. Talk to your friends, family, and co-workers about LGBTQ+ issues and the importance of Pride Month. Uplift and read LGBTQ+ stories. By having these conversations, you can help raise awareness and promote acceptance.
Pride Month is a time to celebrate and honor the LGBTQ+ community. By supporting LGBTQ+ businesses, volunteering for LGBTQ+ causes, educating yourself, attending events, and having meaningful conversations, you and others can shine at full wattage unapologetically.
Happy Pride Month! How do you plan on celebrating, lightworker? Let us know in the comments!
