“My skin didn't start to change until I changed the energy around me.” - Alicia Keys
Mind
“As artists, we just want to continue to be reminded to push the envelope and go farther and higher.” — Alicia Keys
The phrase “practice makes perfect” is a familiar one, but we’re living in an age where perfection and falling in line with old status quos are rightfully up for debate. (Our take? Perfection is a myth, but we’ll take peace of mind all day, everyday.)
Still, you can’t shake the importance of the “practice” part. Alicia’s words — spoken in ode to Harlem Renaissance photographer, artist, and storyteller Gordon Parks — remind us that no matter what our art is, belief in our own innate greatness is what ultimately elevates our games and life experiences.
“We find the greatest inspiration from a man who has always been, to me, defined what a renaissance human being can be: a person without walls, without boundaries, without ceilings,” Alicia continues. “And most importantly, wanting to bring forth the truth. And, challenge our thoughts and our minds to think deeper, and harder, and clearer about the hard truths going on in the world.”
When we acknowledge this inner power, we not only lay a foundation for personal and creative growth, but we’re also likely to inspire others that come after us.
How are you challenging yourself to move past boundaries, self-imposed or otherwise?
