How our team learned to take care of their skin — and themselves — from friends and family.
– KEYS SOULCARE
The journey to finding what works for your skin requires trial, error, and a whole lot of patience. Sometimes, our favorite skin and self-care rituals don’t come from the many (many) articles offering up a silver bullet, but from the friends and family we trust most. In the spirit of leaning on our community, we asked our team who taught them how to take care of their skin and themselves.
“My entire family! Both my mother and father take great care of their skin. My grandparents are the same. My grandmother has the softest skin at over 85 years-old!”— Jocelyn, 33
“My personal journey to learning about skin care started with my Nana. When I was young, she would make creams and potions and upcycle baby food jars for packaging. Her homemade creams were great for body care. They were thick and creamy, which helped with my eczema. She taught me skincare doesn’t have to be costly and it can be a moment for self-care.” — Justin, 28
“My best and oldest friend Teresa (we’re still pals) was always my skincare guru, from when we were just pre-teens. We were always trying new creams and potions together as a way of bonding, discovery, and self-care. We still do! She taught me to turn washing my face into a fun, pleasurable ritual.” — Margit, 53
“My mom always, always made a point to tell me that I was beautiful, inside and out. But, she also invested time in educating me about the value of washing and moisturizing my face — and paying attention to what worked for me, not just what was trendy — as I started to make more of my own purchases. It taught me to get to know my skin as its own ‘thing’ as much as learn to appreciate and care for it.” — Tiffany, 38
“When I lived in Madrid, my roommate worked at Glamour Spain. Each day, she’d bring home tons of samples. When we weren’t out and about, we were home having a spa night.” — Ari, 25
“My mom. She has beautiful skin and always focused on the importance of inner beauty over outward appearance. The first beauty routine she encouraged was washing my face every night — which I still do to this day (religiously) — though no longer with that amber-colored Neutrogena bar that every ‘80s teen used. And sunscreen: She always insisted on sunscreen, and hated that my sister and I wanted to slather ourselves in baby oil and lay out in the sun!” — Robin, 52
“I did not love having acne as a teen, and would drive downtown with my mom to meet with the dermatologist to help remedy my spots. I can remember distinct conversations that helped me know [how] to take care of myself and feel confident, even when I didn’t feel like it.” — Cameron, 39
“I learned a lot about skin care through my best friend. It was kind of a learning together experience, but we’ve shared tips and tricks and rules of thumb with each other. The one thing I’ve learned that has stuck with me the most [is] the importance of cleansing as well as washing your face in the morning and at night. I used to be lazy about it, but I can tell how much my skin needed that!” — Nicole, 24
